CONGLOMERATE SPACE SCOUTS:
“HOW TO START A FIRE…”

Ensure a safe fire site. Clear the area of all flammable materials to make sure the fire cannot spread.

If building the fire on bare ground, do so on an earthen pad several centimeters off the ground if possible.

Gather fuel (preferably wood). Remember, to prevent out of control fires and increase success of igniting the desired fire, be methodical and most of all, be patient.

Arrange the tinder, kindling and fuel wood so as to maximize a successful ignition from a single point source (such as a match, flint kit or starter laser).

Extinguishing the fire is as critical an exercise as creating one.

Putting out the campfire… Extinguish the fire (by removing its oxygen source, letting its fuel burn through or dousing with ample water). The fire can be considered “cold” when you can run your hand through the ashes.

Clean the fire site… Remove any paper, foil or other rudiments of your camping materials from the fire and take with you for proper disposal. If possible, bury the fire site itself. Leave no trace. Conservation and safety are everyone’s responsibility.
